The Punjab Bio-safety Rules, 2014 made under the Section 31 of the Punjab Environmental Protection Act, 1997 provides for the safe handling and management of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and other biologically hazardous materials. It extends to whole of the Punjab. The Punjab Bio-safety Rules, 2014 were introduced to address the potential risks associated with modern biotechnology, especially in agriculture. The Rules provide guidelines and procedures for the safe development, import, export, transport, and use of GMOs. The bio safety rules set out requirements for risk assessment, containment, labeling, and monitoring to safeguard human health, the environment, and biodiversity. The Punjab Bio-safety Rules, 2014 aim to strike a balance between promoting scientific innovation and ensuring the protection of public health and the ecosystem by establishing a framework for the responsible use of biotechnology in the province.
