This Act may be cited as the Punjab Rented Premises Act, 2009. It was enacted to regulate the relationship of l andlord and tenant, to provide a mechanism for settlement of their disputes in an expeditious and cost effective manner. It extends to the whole of the Punjab. This Act provides the creation of tenancy agreement, obligation of parties to a lease/tenancy agreement and grounds for eviction. The Rent Registrar shall maintain a register to enter particulars of a tenancy agreement, agreement to sell or any other agreement in respect of a rented premises. The Government shall establish a Rent Tribunal in a district or an area as it may deem necessary and The Rent Tribunal shall exercise exclusive jurisdiction over a case under this Act. The Act repealed Punjab Urban Rent Restriction Ordinance, 1959 and Punjab Rented Premises Ordinance, 2007.
