The Punjab Environmental Protection (Motor Vehicles) Rules, 2013 are made in accordance with the Section 31 of the Punjab Environmental Protection Act, 1997 vide notification dated 24th December, 2013. It extends to whole of the Punjab. The Punjab Environmental Protection (Motor Vehicles) Rules, 2013 were implemented immediately and aimed at regulating motor vehicles to curb air pollution and noise emissions. The Rules defines key terms and outlines a strict enforcement procedure, where an officer of the Provincial Agency authorized by the Director General can inspect vehicles, issue directions to owners for non-compliance, and even impound vehicles operating against these rules. The Environment Magistrates are tasked with concluding proceedings initiated under these Rules, and vehicle owners are required to deposit fines imposed in a designated government account.
