Mobile Number Portability Regulations, 2005
The Mobile Number Portability Regulations, 2005 are made under the clause (o) of Sub-section (2) of Section 5 of Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) Act, 1996. These Regulations, established by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), introduce the concept of Mobile Number Portability (“MNP”), allowing mobile phone users to retain their phone numbers when switching from one service provider to another. Prior to the implementation of MNP, changing network providers meant getting a new phone number, which was often inconvenient for consumers. The introduction of MNP in Pakistan aimed to promote competition among mobile operators and enhance consumer choice by reducing the barriers to switching providers. The Mobile Number Portability Regulations, 2005 specify the processes and standards for implementing MNP, ensuring a smooth transition for users while maintaining the quality and security of telecommunications services.
