Conviction of former Pakistani President: General Pervez Musharraf - Khalid Zafar & Associates

A special Court comprising Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Waqar Ahmed Seth, Justice Nazar Akbar of the Sindh High Court and Justice Shahid Karim the Lahore High Court awarded death sentence on 17.12.2019 to former military dictator Pervez Musharraf in absentia for suspending the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973 on November 03, 2007. Section 2 of the High Treason (Punishment) Act, 1973 provides that the punishment for high treason shall be death or imprisonment for life. The term high treason is defined in constitution and Court held that Musharraf was guilty of high treason and awarded him death sentence. The Court sentence was announced with a dissenting note from one Judge, who observed that instead of capital punishment the former military ruler should be awarded life imprisonment for his alleged act/crime. General Pervez Musharraf was declared absconder by the Court after he left the country in March, 2016 for Dubai due to medical treatment. The detailed verdict is not yet out however the former general has a right of appeal against his conviction.
